Dragon Boat Regatta – A 2,000 year old legend, a modern day event. Sign Up Now!

Thursday 28th July @ 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm

We are thrilled to confirm the COSMIC Dragon Boat Regatta will return on Thursday 28th July after a two year pause due to COVID.

About the Race

The Dragon Boat Race has taken place in the Paddington Basin for over 10 years. This 2000 year old tradition sees teams of ten rowers and one drummer race down the length of Merchant Square canal, to the beat of the drum, in a bid to reach the finish line and take home the trophy. Fancy dress is encouraged, with previous teams dressed as Vikings, Drag Queens and Pirates. Crews are made up of people from the local area – work colleagues – families and friends all coming together to raise money for the local children of St Mary’s Intensive Care (COSMIC) charity. Watch a previous event here!

There are three prizes to be won. The fastest team, the runner up and the best dressed. The 2019 winner was construction company McAleer & Rushe who won in a very close final against Adam & Eve. Along with the fun of the race, you can also enjoy drinks, street food and canal side entertainment whilst raising money for this vital local cause.

Sign up to compete against up to 19 other teams to win the 2022 Dragon Boat Regatta Trophy!

About COSMIC

COSMIC was established in 1994 to provide better care for critically ill children than was possible within the NHS budget. The charity supports the paediatric intensive care unit and neonatal intensive care units at St Mary’s and Queen Charlotte’s Hospitals in London.

Since its inception COSMIC has:

-Purchased over £2,000,000 of life saving equipment which the NHS is unable to fund

-Spent over £500,000 on ground-breaking research into paediatric health.

-Raised £1.5 million to create COSMIC House – onsite accommodation for families in intensive care.

-Funded incubators for babies in intensive care.

-Provided hundreds of hours counselling for families and frontline staff.

Children

The children’s intensive care unit at St Mary’s Hospital treats 500-600 critically ill children of all ages every year. Without this specialist care, many of these children would not survive.

Babies

More than 1,000 babies are admitted to the neonatal units each year. They look after premature and ‘extremely pre-term’ babies (born before 27 weeks’ gestation) and infants with complex medical needs.

Research

We fund cutting-edge research, including studies on rare or poorly-understood conditions such as Kawazaki Disease and Meningococcal Disease.

Family Support

Through COSMIC house, we provide accommodation to parents and carers who need support most. Meanwhile, our Family Support Team helps families cope with their child’s illness, the discharge process, access to social care and bereavement support.
