Dreaming of a White Christmas

The most wonderful time of the year is fast approaching, and we’ve got the perfect gift for you – three dazzling performances that will have you feeling extremely Christmas-ey. Unlike the typical Christmas carollers you expect to see at this time of year, we’re mixing it up at Merchant Square to bring you an explosive brass music, expressive dance and Caribbean vibes – all with a Christmas twist.

Sunny Steel Band: Tuesday 5th December, 12pm – 2.30pm, West Plaza Steps

Sunny Steelband are the world’s most exiting and original Caribbean band, bringing together the traditional Calypso sounds of the West Indies and more recent pop chart hits to get you feeling hot Hot HOT! The bright, young musicians of Sunny Steelband have all won several major Steel Band music competitions with Steel Orchestras such as Mangrove and Ebony in the UK and the legendary Desperadoes in Trinidad. They are set to bring the wonderful rhythms of the Caribbean with a Christmas twist to the heart of Merchant Square so get ready to limbo!

Speaker Box Street Party – Wednesday 6th December, 12pm – 2.30pm, Fountain Maze

Speaker Box Street Party is a social dance community that runs multicultural events on the street where everyone can express their feelings of happiness, love and passion through music and dance. They believe that music and dance break down the walls that divide us racially, generationally, religiously and politically. This is an interactive performance so be sure to bring your dance shoes.

NEW DATE: Fat Brass – Wednesday 13th December, 3pm – 5pm

Fat Brass are an explosive lip-splitting brass tour de force, effortlessly splicing tunes at the top of the charts with deep cuts from the very bottom of the crate, laced with musicianship & incredible improvisation. Think Disclosure superposed with ABBA, D’Angelo mixed with Rihanna, Chaka Khan up against Kano. Composed of the creme-de-la-creme of up-and-coming horn players and drummers, the band seamlessly blends into one uncompromising wall of sound, laced with detail and improvisation.

Let the Christmas jolly’s begin!
